Why you should still check cross traffic at a green light

On Behalf of | Apr 16, 2024 | Car Accidents |

When the light turns green and you’re at the front of the traffic lane, what do you do? Do you simply drive through the intersection, knowing that the green light gives you the right way? Or are there any other steps you need to take to stay safe?

Many people will just drive forward, trusting that the green light means it’s their turn to go. But there are those who argue you should always check both ways, even at a green light. After all, that light isn’t going to stop another vehicle. If someone runs the red light going the other direction, they’re going to hit your car, whether you have the right way or not.

The role of distracted driving

One woman who works as a mortician and sees these issues often noted that distracted driving plays a big role. She even said that they would find accident scenes where a person’s cellphone was still unlocked and recovered from the debris. They could see the text message that the person was sending, which took their eyes off of the road and caused them to miss the change in the light.

The dangers of distracted driving have been widely reported, but it does still happen, and this shows why you face serious risks at intersections. You may have the right of way, but it only takes one mistake by another driver to hit your vehicle. You could immediately suffer very serious injuries or even lose a loved one in the crash. If you do, then it’s time for you to look into all of your options to seek proper financial compensation.
