Why is it so hard to avoid distracted driving?

On Behalf of | Jul 10, 2024 | Car Accidents |

Every year, distracted driving leads to thousands of accidents. These result in an incredible amount of injuries and even fatalities. Along with things like impaired driving and speeding, distracted driving is one of the top reasons for serious car accidents. More than 3,000 people pass away annually, on average.

But why can’t drivers seem to avoid distraction? If it’s clear how dangerous it is, why do they keep falling victim to it? Here are two potential reasons.

They are addicted to their phones

First and foremost, texting and driving is one of the most common distractions. But this also includes any type of activity on a mobile device. Drivers who are addicted to checking their notifications or engaging with peers on social media may be tempted to use the phone in the car. Even though they know it’s dangerous, the addiction makes it too hard for them to put the phone down long enough to drive to their destination.

There are many sources of distraction

On top of that, it’s important to remember that the cellphone is not the only type of distraction a person may face in the car. They could be distracted by the music they’re listening to, the passengers in the car with them or activity on the road around them. Some drivers get distracted just trying to use their GPS device or adjust the mirrors on the car. With so many sources of distraction, it’s a constant threat.

If you do suffer serious injuries in an accident caused by a distracted driver, be sure you know what legal options you have.
