How important is tire inflation to your safety on the road?

On Behalf of | Feb 13, 2022 | Car Accidents |

For your vehicle to perform in the safest manner possible, it relies on various components working optimally. Some aspects of the car, such as air conditioning or interior heating, may not place road users in immediate danger if they are faulty. However, there are certain parts of the vehicle that are indispensable.

Tires are fundamental to ensuring that drivers remain safe, and they must be inflated appropriately. This is something that you can check yourself, and it is best practice to do so regularly. Tire pressures can change depending on the weather, road surface and temperatures. If your tires are underinflated, then you run the risk of losing control with a tire blowout. Fortunately, there are some steps that you can take to reduce the risk of underinflated tires causing you to run into problems.

Perform regular checks at home

You can purchase a tire pressure gauge for an affordable amount. This will allow you to check pressures yourself, which should be done at least every few weeks. Remember to carry a spare and don’t neglect to include this spare tire in your routine checks.

Know the appropriate pressures

Each tire will have an optimal pressure and the manual for your vehicle should tell you this. If you don’t have access to it, manufacturers often make manuals available online.

Remember the temperature

You should be performing your checks while the tires are cold. As a vehicle is on the move, tires will heat up, causing the air inside them to expand. If you have just returned from a journey, your tires will be hot and need some time to get back to a sitting temperature. This is when you will get the most accurate recording.

Vehicle maintenance is key to driver safety and it is important to stay on top of this. Unfortunately, no matter what you do, you can still be caught up in a collision. If you have been harmed in a crash, there may be legal options available for you to pursue a claim for compensation.
