The truth about neck injuries in the workplace

On Behalf of | Jan 9, 2018 | Blog |

When you work a job day after day, it’s no surprise that you develop aches and pains. Sometimes, those aches and pains are more than they appear, though. It’s important to get medical care when you need it, and workers’ compensation is there for you.

One common injury on the job is a neck injury with pain. Neck pain may start slow and develop over time. You may notice that your arm falls asleep more often or that your shoulders feel pinched. Maybe you notice it hurts to turn your head from side to side or up and down. Whatever the pain is causing, that injury is something you need to have looked at by a doctor.

What causes neck pain?

Neck pain comes from anything ranging from strains and sprains to disk problems. Two muscles, the levator scapulae and trapezius, are commonly strained because of their positioning. These long neck muscles help bend and rotate the neck, so if they’re not working properly, you’ll struggle to move freely and without pain.

Why do people end up with neck injuries?

Some people lift something too heavy, while others perform activities repetitively, which causes wear and tear on the muscles over time. Falls and poor posture also play a role in neck pain’s development.

How can you treat neck injuries?

The first step is to have a medical provider look at your neck. Until you know the cause, it’s hard to treat an injury. Until then, rest, anti-inflammatory medications and hot or cold compresses may be a good way to reduce pain and stress. If necessary, severe injuries could require surgery or other medical treatments like rehabilitation or physical therapy.

Neck injuries impact your daily life, but with patience and medical treatment, it’s possible to reduce pain and get back to doing the things you love.
