Experienced Juvenile Law Attorneys

At Smith, Dickey & Dempster P.A., our attorneys understand the juvenile justice system. We have more than 50 years of experience defending clients against criminal charges. As former district attorneys and a former district court judge, we know how to defend juveniles. Attorney Andrew Dempster is a former judge and was one of the first certified juvenile court judges in North Carolina.

Our experience and knowledge of juvenile law help us better defend your child. We know what steps to take to get the best possible outcome, and we have experience navigating the complex and changing laws in our state.

What To Know About Juvenile Law

Starting December 1, 2018, 16- and 17-year-olds will be treated as juvenile defendants instead of adults in the criminal justice system in North Carolina. Under current law, teens of ages 16 and 17 were treated as adults when facing criminal charges. This can result in serious consequences for teenagers convicted of criminal offenses, making it difficult to go to college, and find housing and employment in the future.

The new law will treat teenagers of ages 16 and 17 as juveniles. This means teenagers convicted of crimes will face different penalties and consequences under the juvenile justice system.
